Indian weddings are elaborate affairs and a Telegu wedding is an apt example where the entire marriage ceremony can last up to sixteen days. This is also known as the Padahaaru Rojula Panduga. Muhurtam, the Moment of Solemnizing the Alliance

After the moment has been sealed, the marriage festivities begin with Pendikoothuru or the haldi ceremony where both the bride and the groom are smeared with turmeric oil paste. On the wedding morning, the bride and the groom take a bath which is supposed to purify them for the auspicious rituals. This is called the mangal snanam. Post this, the bride and the groom in their respective houses perform and aarti where all the family members pray for a happy matrimonial life. Specifically in the bride’s house, Gauri puja is performed to seek the blessings of the goddess. Gauri is the other name for Goddess Durga and is considered to be a symbol of happiness in home and hearth. Similarly, the groom after reaching the venue, even before the bride arrives, performs a Ganesh puja to ward off obstacles in the marriage.

The bride is carried in a bamboo basket by her maternal uncles to the mandap. At the mandap, the bride and the groom are separated by a curtain. The priest then offers prayers to the ancestors. This is followed by Kanyadaan where the bride’s parents wash the groom’s feet as a symbol of placing their trust on him as a form of god and offering their daughter’s hand in marriage. After this ritual, the bride and the groom smear each other’s hands with a paste of cumin seeds and jaggery as a symbolic act of staying together in bitter sweet times. This is known as Jeerakalla-Bellamu.

The curtain is now removed and the groom ties the mangasultra around his bride’s neck with three knots symbolizing communion at a spiritual, mental and a physical level.

Post this, they exchange garlands and are blessed by everyone present in the wedding by showering turmeric colored rice or akshata. The couple then take seven holy rounds around the fire and puts a silver toe ring on the bride’s toe. This ritual is called Sthaalipaakam. This completes the wedding rituals. Post this the girl leaves her home and is joyfully accepted into the new household through a grihapravesh.

The girl’s father is involved with this ceremony in Telugu Matrimonial as it is one where he blesses and honors the groom-to-be. There is an elaborate pooja in which the father of the bride holds a flask of milk that he used to bathe the legs of the groom. They are then wiped with a silk cloth signifying the end of the ceremony.

The Main Wedding: Vivaaham

Once both families and guests have arrived at the venue of the nuptials, the ceremony then commences. Escorted by women carrying the changala vatta and ashtamangaliya, the bridegroom enters the venue. Nadaswarams are heard ringing with holy music as the sounds of a thayli commence, as the groom then awaits the family members of the bride. He has to stand on a piece of wood and be honored by his wife-to-be’s brother for he will bathe his feet and the female relatives will perform an aarti.

The Auspicious Time or Muhurtam

Once the muhurtam approaches, the bride faces the east and has her husband-to-be in front of her. He then puts a thali around her neck (it is the Telugu alternative to a mangalsutra) solidifying their marriage. Both Reddy families rejoice when the boy ties the golden ornament hanging from a yellow string around the bride’s neck.

The Age Old Kanyadaan

This ceremony includes the bride and her mother’s sister for the Reddy nuptials are incomplete without a kanyadaan. The bride dressed in her bridal finery is brought onto the stage by her aunt. With a powerful stress on holiness, most of the customs are carried out in the presence and under the guidance of a pandit or purohit. Akshata is a colourful custom for the bride and groom throw flower jaimalas around the other’s neck. Her parents then hand her over to the groom who is deemed to be as good as Lord Vishnu.

The Final Saptapadi

After the kanyadaan is the final phase of the nuptials that is the Saptapadi or saat pheras around the agni, as the purohit chants prayers from the Vedas. This is where the knot is finally tied with the bride’s pallu and the groom’s dhoti, signifying them being joined in marriage forever.

Attending guests spray the happy couple with rose petals, turmeric and grains of rice as Akshata. These are blessings signifying the end of the ceremonies and celebrating a successful union.

Welcoming the New Bride and Other Post Wedding Rituals in a Kamma Ceremony

The Kamma community belonging to the state of Andhra Pradesh is a true standout among the other Dravidian races. The interesting spiritual origin of the community, the repercussions of this cultural history onto their marital practices and the sheer beauty of seeing the bride and the groom unite in holy matrimony make Kamma weddings a much sought after ceremony of the state.

Like in any other Telugu matrimony celebration, the main event of the Kamma wedding is the tying of the mangalasutra around the neck of the bride. This event marks the official start of the couple’s life together as the husband and wife. Griha Pravesh

The welcoming of the bride into the groom’s family is called Griha Pravesh. The bride enters the groom’s house for the very first time. She places her right foot into the house first and is welcomed by the groom’s mother by performing an Aarati. Close relatives of the groom are also present during the ceremony. This ritual is performed during an auspicious time as the people of the Kamma community believe that the entering of the bride denotes the beginning of prosperity and wealth to the family.

Venkateswara Deeparadhana and Satyanarayan Vratam

Most families of the Kamma community are implicit believers of Lord Venkateshwara and hence perform special pujas to the deity during all special occasions. The first puja performed by the bride in her new home is called the Satyanarayan Vratam during which the bride and the groom fast through the day. It usually takes place a day or two after the bride arrives at her in-law’s place. The couple break the fast after seeing the moon and together perform the Aarati for the gods. This puja can be performed on any day except the new moon day.

Uniting the Knot

The threads of the mangalasutra are tied together with gold and black beads in between the two“coin-like” structures and slipped into a golden casing. This ritual is performed on the 16th day after the wedding and is usually performed by the mother or the paternal aunt of the groom. The bride wears new clothes and performs a special puja before the ritual. Elders of the family offer their blessings to the newly-wed couple. The mangalasutra is considered a symbol of commitment, implicit love for the husband and a prayer to God for his long life.
